It is traditionally accepted that this name refers to the initial project proposed by the American Austin Car Company and ultimately developed by the Ford Motor Company under the code name “Ford GP-W.” “GP” is thought to stand for either ” General Purpose ” or ” Government Purposes .” The word “jeep” could therefore derive from this acronym “GP,” pronounced in English as ” jeep-pee .” This origin of the name is found in the 1943 propaganda film ” Autobiography of a Jeep ” by United Films.

This etymology, which is found in all French dictionaries, is nevertheless controversial ^[ 4 ] . R. Lee Ermey , in his television series Mail Call , specifies that the vehicle was designed for very specific, not general , purposes , and that, moreover, the GIs who drove the vehicle, and who gave it the nickname, were probably unaware of the official designation GP-W given in the design offices. Ermey and others suggest that the name “jeep” comes from the Popeye comic strip by E.C. Segar , where it appears inMarch 1936An imaginary animal named Eugene the Jeep (called Pilou-Pilou in French) ^[ 3 ] . “Jeep” is an onomatopoeia commonly used by cartoonists to imitate the cry of a baby bird. Skilled and possessing extraordinary abilities, this small jungle animal is capable of getting out of difficult situations. The nickname “jeep” was then given to the vehicle because of its exceptional characteristics.
